Habilitated doctor Adolfas Tautavičius (1925-2006) is one of the most prominent Lithuanian archaeological specialists. Since 1947 he has been involved in the research of many Lithuanian sites, from 1962 to 1987 he was the head of the Archaeology Department of the Institute of History, and was one of the first Lithuanian archaeologists to study the castles of Vilnius, Trakai and Klaipėda. From 1988 to 2002, A. Tautavičius explored the territory of the Palace of the Grand Dukes, and was the head of the Archaeological Department of the Castles Research Centre "Lithuanian Castles".
The author of the diary describes the years of his and his colleagues' scientific activity - important stages of Lithuanian archaeological science in the 20th century. The notes are regarded as a history of Lithuanian archaeology in the second half of the 20th century, written by one of the most active scientists.
