As Statehood Day approaches, photographer Raimondas Paknys invites visitors to remember the heritage of our historic state

20230704

The object of Raimondas Paknys’ photographs are the ruins of Christian sanctuaries, mostly Catholic churches and chapels, or more precisely – the vestiges of polychromy on the walls of these buildings.

These vestiges of polychromy are a universal signifier of historical heritage, which allow the photographer to overlook the functional typology of architecture and present examples of artistic culture that existed over an entire region (in this case, the territory of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth) and within a broad chronological period (the 17th–19th centuries). The buildings captured in minute detail using an analog camera are scattered across an enormous territory that once belonged to one state – the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Today, these lands are divided between Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and Lithuania, however the heritage objects still standing there hark back to shared cultural roots and historical bonds.

An exhibition of priceless treasures opens in Vilnius – the tapestries of Sigismund Augustus

20230503

The international exhibition The Tapestries of Sigismund Augustus in Vilnius, opened at the National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. Extraordinary in size and scope, growing into a legend over the centuries, the tapestry collection of the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania Sigismund Augustus (1544/1548–1572) is the oldest national relic of the Polish-Lithuanian state. In contemporary Poland, the tapestry collection is known as an art treasure, the most important accent in the permanent expositions at the Wawel Royal Castle in Krakow, while the exhibition of such a collection in Lithuania is a historic event for both Lithuania and Poland, a neighbouring state’s gift on the occasion of Vilnius’ 700th anniversary.

Under fire from russian missiles, Lviv sent Vilnius a priceless gift for the city’s 700th anniversary

20230216

To mark the occasion of Vilnius’ 700th anniversary, Ukraine is gifting an exhibition presenting 33 painting masterpieces from the Borys Voznytsky Lviv National Art Gallery – namely, two of its main branches established in the Potocki and Lozinski palaces. These paintings are key exhibits in the permanent expositions, masterpieces of European art, and an extraordinary gift from the war-ravaged country.

During peacetime, when cultural heritage is not at risk, such a collection would never leave Lviv as the museum halls would be left bereft of exhibits. Under the conditions of Moscow’s aggression, the organisation of such an exhibition in Lithuania is also an attempt to protect our collective European heritage from the risk of potential missile attacks, and is also an exceptional gift from Lviv to Vilnius, which is marking its anniversary.

The exhibition An Untroubled Age. Childhood in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania opens

20221014

An exclusive exhibition has opened at the National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania that reveals how the life of children changed from the second half of the 14th century through to the middle of the 19th century. This is the first exhibition of its kind dealing with this theme in Lithuania, standing out from similar exhibitions organised in other countries for its multifaceted approach. The organisation of an exhibition covering this kind of cross-section of themes is a very complicated process, demanding not just a thorough understanding of history and culture but also knowledge of the collections kept in memory institutions and experience in selecting exhibits for display. Almost 300 exhibits are featured in this exhibition, gathered from museum, archive, library and private collections in Austria, Hungary, Sweden, Poland, Ukraine and Lithuania – in total from as many as 28 owners. While organising this exhibition, the aims was to show how attitudes towards childhood changed over the ages: from “invisible” little ones in society to infants in family portraits, from society criticising mothers who were too attached to their offspring to acknowledgement of the child as an individual. The exhibition has something interesting for adults and children alike.
