The Museum brings together under one roof the historical and cultural legacy of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, one of the most influential powers in Central and Eastern Europe during the 14th–16th centuries and an equal partner of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Museum aims to safeguard, research and actualise the heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by collaborating with national institutions, museums and other cultural organisations of the countries in the historical lands of the Gediminian-Jagiellon dynasty and the House of Vasa, as well as other countries linked with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by their historical and cultural ties.

The National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania is successfully integrated into the European cultural and scientific institutions network and is active in developing its international relations. We work in partnership with more than 200 historical residences of rulers and nobles of European and other countries, museums and institutions that preserve historical and cultural heritage, organise international conferences and exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad, exchange exhibits, consult on the restoration and conservation of cultural artefacts, implement joint scientific research, cultural, and educational projects, many of which are aimed at the general public. One of the audience favourites is the Marco Scacchi International Early Music Festival, which has taken place since 2015. In 2022, the Museum signed a cooperation agreement with the London-based company Educational Solutions Team, where it agreed to cooperate in organising educational activities for students of foreign Lithuanian schools. Since 2023, we have joined the Family Card program for large families and families caring for children with disabilities, providing benefits, concessions and discounts in the public and private sectors in all three Baltic countries.
During the implementation of the rebuilding project of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, particularly active cooperation was developed with the Wawel Royal Castle – State Art Collections, (Zamek Królewski na Wawelu – Państwowe Zbiory Sztuki), the Royal Castle in Warsaw – Museum (Zamek Królewski w Warszawie – Muzeum) in Poland, and the Dresden State Art Collections (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden) in Germany. Today, we are honoured to cooperate with many partners, including the Malbork Castle Museum (Muzeum Zamkowe w Malborku), National Museums in Warsaw, Krakow and Poznan, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute (Instytut Adama Mickiewicza), the Ossolineum (Zakładzie Narodowym im. Ossolińskich) and many other cultural institutions in Poland, the Estense Castle Museum (Castello Estense) in Ferrara, the Sforza Castle in Milan (Castello Sforzesco di Milano) and the Ducal Palace in Mantova (Palazzo Ducale di Mantova) in Italy, the Bavarian National Museum (Bayerisches Nationalmuseum) and the University Library of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (Universitätsbibliothek der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München) in Germany, the Borys Voznytsky Lviv National Art Gallery (Львівська національна галерея мистецтв імені Бориса Возницького), the Lviv History Museum (Львівський історичний музей) and the Volyn Regional Museum (Волинський краєзнавчий музей) in Ukraine, the Rundale Palace Museum (Rundāles Pils Muzejs) in Latvia and many others.
The National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania is a member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the Association of Castles and Museums around the Baltic Sea, the Early Music Network in Europe (REMA).
The Museum is committed to sharing its collection, knowledge and expertise as widely as possible. Since its opening, we have collaborated with national and international partners on various exhibitions, including large-scale themed international and touring exhibitions and scientific conferences. Fostering relations with the historical regions of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania contributes to deepening the country’s sovereignty, historical memory, and European identity. It also promotes a deeper understanding of our shared history as part of Europe’s cultural and religious heritage. We aim to offer visitors the chance to experience the region’s leading Christian and multi-confessional nature and thereby contribute to the richness of European heritage by presenting the multicultural memory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which once connected Eastern and Western civilisations.
