Exhibition of Kazimierz Alchimowicz’s painting “The funeral of Gediminas”

This exhibition presenting the painting by Kazimierz Alchimowicz The Funeral of Gediminas symbolically brings to a close the 700th anniversary of Vilnius programme. It was none other than Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas who was the first to herald the name of Vilnius in 1323. As the cycle of events dedicated to the history of Vilnius comes to an end, the National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania invites visitors to honour a ruler whose character inspires creators to this day.

International exhibition “Between presence and memory. Historic images of the Vilnius castles“

The international exhibition of historic iconography presents the origins, development and memory and reconstruction visions of the Vilnius castles and one of their most important objects – the Lower Castle’s residence of the Lithuanian grand dukes. The exhibition features approximately two hundred visual sources – cartography, paintings, graphic art and other works – chronologically spanning a period from the late 14th century to the second half of the 20th century. In addition to authentic works, visitors will also be able to see enlarged facsimiles in which important details will be more visible.

From a unicorn to the three kings: Gothic stove tiles from the Collections of the Palace of the Grand Dukes

This exhibition presents just one artefact group from this rich collection – Gothic flat stove tiles. The stove tile collection dating to the mid-15th century consists of around 650 stove tiles and fragments thereof, decorated with at least 60 different narratives. Some of the stove tiles from the turn of the 15th–16th centuries are also included in our Gothic collection. The stove tiles are decorated with heraldic symbols, scenes from the lives of the saints, biblical scenes, mythological and everyday life narratives. A hypothetical mid-15th century stove was reconstructed based on this collection as part of the overall reconstruction of the Gothic period interiors at the National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania.

The exhibition Freedom Symbols of the Baltic States, 1918–1940. Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia continues the National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania’s tradition to organise exhibitions dedicated to revealing the history of our 20th-century statehood and its continuity. At a time when Ukraine is fighting for its fate and the destiny of all of Europe, the exhibition’s relevance is further heightened by the freedom theme.

A Renaissance Masterpiece from Wawel. Giovanni Bellini’s "Madonna and Child"

In 2023, the Wawel Royal Castle – State Art Collection (Poland) acquired a masterpiece of 15th-century Italian painting – Madonna and Child by Giovanni Bellini (ca 1430–1516), one of the most famous Italian artists of all time and a genius of the Renaissance. This magnificent painting can be traced back to the 19th century and is known to have belonged to famous art collections. It is now a diamond in the Wawel Royal Castle collection.

International engraving exhibition "From the creation of the world to the apocalypse"

The National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, in cooperation with the Scientific Library of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Polish Academy of Sciences in Kraków (Biblioteka Naukowa PAU i PAN w Krakowie), presents an international engraving exhibition dedicated to probably the most significant and largest collection of graphic art works not just in Poland but in the whole Central Eastern European region.

The international exhibition The Pacs. Lilies in the Garden of History

The Pacs are one of the most eminent, oldest, influential, wealthiest and most celebrated magnate families in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, who held the title of counts. They are likely to have originated from the Grodno and Lida surrounds. Like many other Lithuanian magnate families, the Pacs consistently highlighted the legend of their Roman origins. Due to their exceptional role in Lithuania’s history, this family can be compared to the Radziwill princes and the Sapieha dukes. At one point, the Pacs had even become the factual rulers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, continuing the tradition of protecting and strengthening Lithuania’s statehood. Many representatives of the Pac family held high-ranking state and church offices, were well educated and were known for their refined artistic tastes.

The National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania is continuing its year-long cooperation with the Wawel Royal Castle – State Art Collections in Kraków (Poland) and in this exhibition, Italian Renaissance from Wawel: Botticelli, Tiziano, it is presenting another five outstanding works by Italian Renaissance artists.
