At the beginning of the 17th century, many new musical movements developed in Italy, heralding the beginning of the Baroque era. After the polyphonic music of the Renaissance, a simpler harmonic structure and basso continuo (generalbass) emerged, emotion and effects in music became more significant. The strict practice of polyphonic compositional rules that dominated before mitigated, and instrumental music became increasingly autonomous from vocal music. The great composers of these new times - famous violinists and cornetto players such as Dario Castello, Biagio Marini or Giovanni Battista Fontana.

The axis of the programme presented by the ensemble “Cordaria” is Giovanni Battista Buonamente, an exemplary representative of the “new” instrumental music. The famous violinist, who created and published several sets of instrumental music, became a witness and participant in the development of this genre, which spanned several decades. During his work and that of his contemporaries, this independent instrumental concert music established itself and reached its apogee.

The focus of this concert programme is cornetto and violin. Both high (soprano) solo instruments are similar in tessitura and play an important role in the repertoire of early Baroque music. The public loves these instruments for their virtuosity and the pleasant timbre heard when they are in the hands of talented performers.

The early music ensemble “Cordaria” was founded in 2018. At the heart of this ensemble lies the musical partnership between Katharina Haun and Vilimas Norkūnas. The ensemble has performed several times at the International Marco Scacchi and Biržai “Baroko Pavasaris” early music festivals, and has prepared many concert programmes, including “A Quattro Canti”, “Gaudeamus Omnes”, “In the Footsteps of Biagio Marini”.
