Program features Georg Friederich Händel, Georg Philipp Telemann
The Duchy of Magdeburg has granted us two of the most famous composers of the late Baroque period in Europe. One was especially known for his operas, oratorios, anthems and organ concertos. His operatic work shows that he was not only a great composer, but also a dramatic genius. Händel’s name enjoys rightful notoriety in our days, since he was one of the most influential composers of his time.
Differently from Händel, Georg Philipp Telemann was almost forgotten in the nineteenth century and nowadays he is often considered as a minor composer. He settled in Hamburg in 1721, where he became the musical director of five main churches. No wonder that he had to compose more than 1,000 sacred cantatas, being considered today the most prolific composer of all times! As a multi-instrumentalist, he could compose idiomatically for all kinds of instruments. He was immensely popular not only in Germany, but in the rest of Europe as well.
In this program, the ensemble “Canto Fiorito” presents the most emblematic works of these two geniuses for the formation of voice, recorder, viola da gamba and harpsichord, exploring the vocal and instrumental virtuosity typical for the first half of the eighteenth century. La Lucrezia by Händel is his most powerful cantata. Seele, lerne dich erkennen by Telemann is a beautiful dialogue between the voice, the recorder and the continuo. The instrumental part of the program, no less powerful, presents pieces in very different and unusual formations.
Poetry and drama, sweetness and torment, fragility and strength; all fine ingredients to explore the spectrum of human emotions through the music of two geniuses, the two virtuosos from Magdeburg.
