Prominent researcher of Italian opera and historian of Naples’ musical culture, prof. Dinko Fabris presents a rarely heard in Lithuania, but a popular 17th-century genre of opera-torneo, which spread from the Italian principalities to the manors of Paris, Vienna and Munich. Opera, born at the close of the Renaissance, encapsulated all the muses - poetry, singing, instrumental music, dance, art and movement (this idea of the synthesis of arts was used by the inventors of cinema 300 years later). Opera-torneo includes even more elements that originated from medieval bloody knightly tournaments, which transformed into ritual ballet during the Renaissance. Equestrian squadrons, dances, and parades decorated the magnificent spectacles. Such performances usually took place during weddings and birthdays of kings and princes.
The lecture will be held in English with simultaneous translation into Lithuanian.
