The idea to establish a baroque music ensemble at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre arose when Sesto Quatrini became the theatre’s artistic director. In cooperation with the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, a collective was formed, which unites the artists of the symphony orchestra, who are interested in baroque music and the traditions of performing early music and previously actively performed as members of various chamber ensembles or as soloists.
The creative partnership between Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre and the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania is not accidental and has a clear historical basis. The first operas (dramma per musica) in Lithuania were staged in the residence of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in the 1630s and 1640s. Thus, earlier than in such metropolises as Paris or London. Although the scores have been lost, it is believed that the music was written by the famous Italian composer Marco Scacchi, the kapellmeister of the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Vladislav Vasa. The ensemble Cappella Concertante Vilnense debuted in spring 2022, at the concert of the festival named after him, organized by the National Museum - Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania.
The name of the ensemble is Cappella Concertante Vilnense. The word cappella often describes musical ensembles belonging to a specific place, concertante emphasizes that each member of the ensemble can also perform as a soloist, which is extremely important in baroque music, and Vilnense is the Latinised name of the capital.
