At the beginning of the 17th century, Lithuania was both a participant in the cultural development of the Vasa dynasty and a co-creator of significant musical heritage. Marco Scacchi, Sigismund Vasa’s kapellmeister, while leading one of the most prominent chapels of the Vasa estate at the time, fostered a tradition of Italian music. M. Scacchi’s music bears the influence of his teacher Giovanni Francesco Anerio and, undoubtedly, Claudio Monteverdi’s prototype “seconda pratica” (the so-called new style, where choral music composers try to reduce the polyphony to make the spoken text audible again and brought to the fore), which all composers closely observed. The concert programme of the early music ensemble “CordAria” reveals this path, which is being built towards the new, baroque technique of composition.
