“A miracle when you can live both death and life at the same time, and I don’t know myself, whether alive or dead, but I know that I am for you...” (G. Stefani “Amante Felice”, 1621)

Such 17th-century love verses impressed the initiator of the concert, singer Rūta Vosyliūtė, who has been studying vocal 16-17th century music for several years. During the concert, Rūta, together with the ensemble “Chiaroscuro” will present the genre of secular song - villanelle (Italian villanella, or canzone villanesca). 1537 marks the beginning of this genre in the history of music, when Johannes de Colonia published the first collection of Neapolitan songs, “The Canzone Villanesca Alla Napolitana”, containing 15 poems in the Neapolitan dialect. Poets-musicians who lived and created in Naples were influenced by abundant everyday spoken and singing traditions. It was supplemented by literary and musical fashions and created the villanelle genre. Translated from Italian, the word “villanella” means “rural, simple, everyday song”. Early villanelles are mostly found only in literary sources without written melodies.
