Gesmes chriksczoniskas takes us on a musical journey through 16th–17th-century Reformist churches of Germany, Prussia and Lithuania Minor, starting with the proclamation of Martin Luther’s theses in Wittemburg, proceeding through the Hanseatic cities of northern Germany, Prussia and Lithuania Minor all the way to Kėdainiai, where the Lithuanian memorial book Kniga nobaznistes krikśćioniszkoswas was published 1653 by Lithuania’s Evangelical Reformists.
In this new program, ensemble Morgaine will present to audiences music by 16th–17th-century great German Reformist composers, such as Michael Praetorius, Samuel Scheidt, Johann Hermann Schein, Heinrich Schütz, Heinrich Albert and other composers associated with the Reformation. This music, rarely performed in Lithuania and sung in the early Lithuanian language, features texts translated by Martynas Mažvydas from his two-volume collection Gesmes chriksczoniskas, which was released in 1566 and 1570 in Königsberg.
