Psalms expressing man’s lament and joy, confessions of sin, songs of praise and glory were heard in the Jewish, Christian and Muslim communities alike. The joint programme of Turkish and European musicians continues the tradition of these “sacred bridges” between different religions, seeking to reveal the historic links from the Baroque era in psalms. And there have been numerous such links in the past – the Jew Salamone Rossi created polyphonic compositions based on psalm texts in Italy, and in Istanbul the Pole Wojciech Bobowski, going by the name Alî Ufkî, tried to create a Muslim-Calvinist alliance, transforming Protestant psalms into Ottoman-Turkish music, and so on. In the programme, the polyphonic Western Baroque works blended with Oriental lyricism and monophony serve as unique historical testimony and create an extraordinary event – uniting peoples, nations and religions.
