24th Early Music Festival Banchetto Musicale: Sounds from the East and the West
Stagioni d'Amore: Madrigali concertati from Italy and Sigismund Vasa’s Court in the early 17th century at different times of the years
Brevis Choir and Consort | Lithuania, Poland, Germany
Directors Gintautas Venislovas and Darius Stabinskas
The Brevis Choir and Consort, uniting early music enthusiasts from Lithuania, Poland and Germany, presents a unique music programme dating to the early 17th century, one that is intriguing in several aspects: firstly, it is based on madrigali concertati – the fruit of combining vocal and instrumental music, born at the junction of the Renaissance and Baroque epochs. This genre that is being rediscovered in recent years by researchers surprises audiences even today for its expression, dramatism, and broad spectrum of musical material. It can be likened to a small opera with soloists, ensembles and choirs, instrumental episodes and even touches of ballet.
At this concert audiences will be able to hear works by famous Italian composers never before heard in Lithuania. They include Claudio Monteverdi and Antonio Cifra who maintained ties with our rulers, and musicians Giovanni Valentini, Marco Scacchi and Tarquinio Merula who worked in the king’s palace and court. In addition, the madrigali concertati of Italian composers and European travellers Biagio Marini and Francesco Turini will be brought back to life at the concert, after being forgotten for close to four centuries.
