From a unicorn to the three kings: Gothic stove tiles from the Collections of the Palace of the Grand Dukes

Past event2023y.November1130 d. - 2024y.April0428 d.

This exhibition presents just one artefact group from this rich collection – Gothic flat stove tiles. The stove tile collection dating to the mid-15th century consists of around 650 stove tiles and fragments thereof, decorated with at least 60 different narratives. Some of the stove tiles from the turn of the 15th–16th centuries are also included in our Gothic collection. The stove tiles are decorated with heraldic symbols, scenes from the lives of the saints, biblical scenes, mythological and everyday life narratives. A hypothetical mid-15th century stove was reconstructed based on this collection as part of the overall reconstruction of the Gothic period interiors at the National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania.

Raimondas Paknys’ photography exhibition "The Vestiges of Time: Walls and Colours"

Past event2023y.July0704 d. - 2023y.September0924 d.

The object of Raimondas Paknys’ photographs are the ruins of Christian sanctuaries, mostly Catholic churches and chapels, or more precisely – the traces of polychromy on the walls of these buildings. Marks of polychromy are a universal feature of historical heritage, which allow the photographer to overlook the functional typology of architecture and present examples of artistic culture of an entire region (in this case, the territory of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth) and a broad chronological period (the 17th–19th centuries).

International exhibition "The Tapestries of Sigismund Augustus in Vilnius"

Past event2023y.May0503 d. - 2023y.July0730 d.

The tapestry collection of the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania Sigismund Augustus (1544/1548–1572), distinguished for its highest level of artistry, historical significance, unparalleled scope of an artistic project realised by one client, legendary material value and turbulent destiny is truly a diamond in the context of European art collections. It is viewed as an idiosyncratic phenomenon of European patronage, art and cultural heritage, an actual historic relic of the early Polish-Lithuanian state, equalling the insignia of rulers in terms of its symbolic significance. In current-day Poland, Sigismund Augustus’ tapestries are named as the most valuable historic collection and the most important exhibit at the Wawel Royal Castle in Krakow, drawing inquisitive audiences from around the world.
