President of the European Central Bank Impressed by the National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania

During a meeting with the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda, held in the Dr Pranas Kiznis Gallery, the distinguished guest expressed admiration for the museum’s elegant historical setting and impressive exhibits.
 
Later, Ms Lagarde spoke about the strengths of the common European currency: "Being part of the eurozone has increased the prosperity of the Lithuanian people," noted the ECB President. However, she also highlighted the high inflation in A prestigious event—the Bank of Lithuania’s conference marking the tenth anniversary of the euro's introduction in Lithuania (adopted on 1 January 2015)—was held at the National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. One of the first to congratulate Lithuania on this occasion was the President of the European Central Bank (ECB), Christine Lagarde. Speaking at the conference, she addressed the audience in Lithuanian: *"Laisvė, vienybė, gerovė!" ("Freedom, unity, prosperity!").According to Ms Lagarde, these are Lithuania's core values. "These three words reflect the spirit of the Lithuanian nation," she added.
Europe in recent years, particularly in Lithuania, where it peaked at 22.5% in September 2022. In response, the ECB raised interest rates, though six months ago, it began lowering them again.
 
The conference also brought together representatives from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and other European institutions. Among the attendees were Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission (EC) responsible for economic affairs, Rimantas Šadžius, Minister of Finance of Lithuania, and Gediminas Šimkus, Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania.

The Palace of the Grand Dukes Museum presents one of the most renowned painters of the Baroque era in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth – Szymon Czechowicz (1689–1775). Born in Poland and trained in painting in Italy, Czechowicz became famous as a creator of religious art and was invited to paint in Poland, Lithuania, and cities in present-day Ukraine and Belarus, which at the time belonged to the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Today, each country preserves the surviving works of this master as part of their artistic golden treasury.
The international exhibition "Szymon Czechowicz. Baroque Master in Pidhirtsi" showcases works by the artist that once belonged to the art collections of Pidhirtsi Palace (Ukraine). These paintings adorned the representative and residential spaces of Pidhirtsi for centuries. However, the depicted themes and motifs are also closely related to Czechowicz’s artistic work in Vilnius.

We are delighted and proud that the Palace of the Grand Dukes – a historic center of diplomacy – was the venue where the leaders of the Bucharest Nine, the Nordic countries, and NATO gathered. The summit was attended by leaders of the Baltic States, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Iceland, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The museum’s latest success story – a restored tapestry believed to have been created in the mid-18th century at the Royal Manufacture of Aubusson in France – The Abduction of the Sabine Women – will be presented to the public as part of the permanent exhibition. This beautiful work has undergone a lengthy restoration process, and its restoration story has become an important part of the exhibit. Visitors to the Palace of the Grand Dukes Museum are now given the opportunity to closely explore the tapestry’s history, its restoration stages, and the intricacies of the restorer’s profession.
