Celebrating its 35th anniversary, the international early music festival Banchetto Musicale kicked off its festive program with a subtle journey to the heart of 18th-century Italy – the eternal city of Rome.
Arcangelo Corelli, a virtuoso violinist who had been living there for 20 years, published his 12 sonatas for violin and harpsichord (Sonate a violino e violone o cimbalo) at the turn of the century in 1700, ushering in a new era and setting an example of stylistic perfection. Many composers, starting with his own students, began to follow his style, which today can be described as pure and Apollonian (a restrained, harmonious, and structured art form).
