The beginning of Ukrainian statehood can be traced back to Kievan Rus‘, which formed in the 9th century. At the end of World War I, Ukrainians, like other nations of Central and Eastern Europe, tried to restore their statehood.
This exhibition presents some of the awards of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and other Ukrainian state compounds (1917–1921) and Ukrainian government institutions that had to later withdraw into emigration as a result of Bolshevik Russian aggression.
The awards are from the private collection of Vilius Kavaliauskas. They were first displayed to the public in 2019–2020 in the exhibition Masterpieces of Ukrainian Faleristics at the National Museum of Ukrainian History.
