Tsar of Muscovy Vasily Shuysky swearing an oath of allegiance at the Parliament of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1611
Ca 1611
Lviv Historical Museum (Ukraine)

The painting depicts the humiliation of the prisoners of the Polish-Lithuanian army, the Tsar of Muscovy Vasily Shuysky, his brothers and other high-ranking state figures, who were captured in the Moscow Kremlin in 1610, swearing an oath of allegiance to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth – the state of Poland and Lithuania – to its ruler Sigismund Vasa (1587/1588–1632) and the heir to the Polish-Lithuanian throne, the elected tsar of Muscovy, Władysław Vasa. This historic event took place at the Parliament of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, in the Senate Hall of the Warsaw Royal Castle on October 29, 1611. The painting exhibited in Vilnius belonged to the collection of art works of the Pidhirtsi Castle (near Lviv). It underwent significant restoration in 2011–2013 at the Wawel Royal Castle – State Art Collections in Krakow (Poland).
