Duo Barocco 10th anniversary concert

Duo Barocco
Renata Dubinskaitė, Saulė Šerytė (vocals)
Vilimas Norkūnas (harpsichord)

In 2020, the Duo Barocco emsemble (singers Renata Dubinskaitė and Saulė Šerytė) is marking 10 years of activity dedicated to Baroque vocal music. To commemorate this occasion, the singers have created a new program that exalts the duet genre, presenting the evolution of Italian Baroque chamber duet music from the early to the late Baroque (1600–1750).

The metaphorical title they have chosen for the program, Two-Part Singing from the Heart, reveals how chamber vocal ensembles are different from opera duets. In most cases, instead of the dialogue between two characters typical of opera duets, here we have the thought and emotions of one lyrical character being conveyed, but by harnessing the two-part musical structure – one heart, yet two voices. In these duets, the composers analyse all the potential that Baroque expression offers, its contrasts, applying means of textual painting while not ignoring counterpoint vocal development.

The program presents composers who created early Baroque duets in the early 17th century, such as  Luzzascho Luzzaschi and Claudio Monteverdi, as well as mid-18th-century high Baroque oratorio authors such as Giacomo Carissimi and Giovanni Legrenzi, through to 18th-century refined late Baroque composers such as Antonio Lotti and Giovanni Bononcini. The program closes with a work by German composer Georg Friedrich Händel from his Italian duets series, which reveals how this genre did not lose its relevance throughout the whole Baroque epoch, and continued to have a significant influence on composers from other countries.
