In 1613, on February 14, St. Valentine’s Day, England celebrated the wedding of Princess Elizabeth Stuart and Elector Palatinate Friedrich V in the Royal Chapel of the Palace of Westminster in London. Many artists participated in the ceremony and praised the young couple with various eulogies. Among them was the poet John Donne, who dedicated the wedding epithalamium “Married on St. Valentine’s Day” to the newly-wedded couple. On this occasion, publisher William Hole’s printing house in London published the first printed collection of piano music in the history of English music - “Parthenia or the Maydenhead” (Parthenia in Greek mythology means a chorus of dancing girls). It consisted of virtuoso pieces by the great virginalists of the time, William Byrd, John Bull, and Orlando Gibbons. A year later, a second set of piano music was published - “Parthenia Inviolata or Mayden-Musicke” (publisher Robert Hole). It consisted of simple compositions by unidentified authors for music lovers to perform on harpsichord and bass viola.

The creators of this concert included all the works of “Parthenia Inviolata” in the programme and supplemented them with the instrumental preludes, courantes, pavanes of the first set and popular works of English vocal music composed in London at the time.

Entrance is free of charge, but we kindly ask you to register in advance using this link.
