The son of the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Casimir Jagiellon (1458-1484), Casimir, was renowned for his education, piety and compassion for the sick and the poor. His early death and the miracles associated with him were the impetus for the canonisation of Casimir, which took place in 1602. The attractive personality of the Lithuanian saint inspired many European artists, who painted pictures of the saint, composed poems and wrote musical works. In 1705, the premiere of the oratorio „Sanctus Casimirus re di Polonia“ by Alessandro Scarlatti, one of the most famous Italian composers of the time, commissioned by Marie Casimire d'Arquien, widow of the Polish King and Grand Duke of Lithuania John Sobieski, took place in Florence.
