In the Footsteps of Biagio Marini
A 17th century musical journey from Italy to war-devastated Europe

CordAria (Switzerland, Austria, Lithuania):
Katharina Haun – cornetto, Vera Otasek – violin, John Martling – theorbo, Vilimas Norkūnas – harpsichord and organ

During the thirty years’ war between the Protestant North and the Catholic South, Biagio Marini found shelter and thrived as a Catholic musician on the safe havens of Venice and Neuburg an der Donau. Marini made significant contributions to most of the contemporary genres and investigated unusual compositional procedures, and his innovative style became influential to his contemporaries. While the reality of the dreadful war was able to shake the Habsburg policy of success by engaging in suitable marriages (alliances before battles), music life still managed to survive and flourish. Perhaps as an escape from the desolate present, Love is almost omnipresent in both secular and sacred music. The humanly love or the love to God, Jesus or the virgin Mary reoccurs in almost every collection of the time.
This program is an illustrated book depicting the path of a prolific European musician in the first half of the 17th Century.
