Balys Vaitkus (b. 1963) graduated with distinction from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre in the specialties of piano (class of Prof. M. Azizbekov) and organ (class of Prof. L. Digris) (1985), later – organ postgraduate studies at the Lübeck University of Music (1994, Germany, class of Prof. Martin Haselböck). 2007–2008 B. Vaitkus studied Baroque harpsichord at the Prague Academy of Arts (Czech Republic). He was an intern at the “Académie de Sablé” (2008, Prof. Françoise Lengellé, harpsichord), the Hague Royal Conservatory (2013, Netherlands, prof. Jacques Ogg, harpsichord), Leipzig University Musicology Institute of Historical Museum of Musical Instruments (2013, Germany). In 2015 he defended his doctorate in fine arts at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (doctorate research supervisors – Prof. G. Lukšaitė-Mrázková and Prof. Habil. Dr. Gražina Daunoravičienė).
B. Vaitkus is the laureate and winner of international piano and harpsichord competitions in Latvia (1984), the Czech Republic (1989), Germany (1993) and Lithuania (international M. K. Čiurlionis’ harpsichord competition in Vilnius, 1995). Since 1989 he teaches at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. 2011–2016 he worked as the organist and harpsichordist of the Lithuanian National Philharmonic’s ensemble “Musica Humana”; since 2014 he is collaborating with the Baroque Opera Theatre. He performs as a solo organist and harpsichordist, as well as together with Lithuanian and international chamber and symphony orchestras, choirs. He participated in the recording of several CDs, one of which is the CD “Historical Organs of Lithuania” (2008, 2015).
