The only baroque orchestra in Baltic States „Collegium Musicum Riga“ presents one of the most popular pastoral operas of baroque composer G. F. Handel „Acis and Galatea“ in the unique setting of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania.

The plot of the two act opera is centered on challenging love story of nymph Galatea and shepherd Acis, which is overshadowed by monstrous giant Polyphemus. In this performance the greatest attention is given to the sense of relationships and deep inner world of humanly emotions.

This opera follows a contemporary trend to perform early music in an authentic way: musicians play with baroque instruments in genre-appropriate manner, soloists wear eye-catching authentic costumes. In this production connections with modern times are explored by subtly embedding symbols of contemporary culture.

Opera is performed by baroque orchestra „Collegium Musicum Riga“, together with baroque choir „Collegium Choro Musici Riga“. Leader of both collectives is the Founder and Head of Riga Early Music Centre as well as Early Music Department of J. Vītols Latvian Academy of Music – famous Latvian conductor Māris Kupčs. Soloists of this performance are young and promising Latvian singers, which perform widely not only in their own country, but also abroad – Monta Martinsone, Rinalds Kandalincevs, Sergejs Martinovs, and Elīna Šimkus.
