More about CHIAROSCURO
In 1525, the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, Albrecht of Brandenburg (1490–1568), converted to Lutheranism and, having sworn allegiance to the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Sigismund the Old (reigned 1506–1548), declared the state of the Teutonic Order the Duchy of Prussia. On his initiative, the University of Königsberg, founded in 1544 at the cathedral, became an important cultural center of attraction. Abraham Kulvietis and Stanislaus Rapolionis, who came from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, worked here, Immanuel Kant left a clear mark, and Martynas Mažvydas, a student of this university, published the first book in Lithuanian.
The ensemble “Chiaroscuro” presents the work and poetry of Simon Dach (1605–1659), a graduate of the University of Königsberg. One of the main highlights of this concert program is the works of Heinrich Albert (1604–1651), organist and composer of the Königsberg Cathedral, written according to the texts of the poet S. Dach. “There is a monument to this poet, born in Klaipėda, but how many Lithuanians have heard music written according to his verses? It was a big surprise for me, it was extremely interesting to get acquainted with this historical musical heritage, with the activities of the poets and musicians’ society “Kürbshütte” (the society operated in Königsberg (now Kaliningrad) in 1630–1641), and the music itself is surprisingly interesting, beautiful and diverse,” says harpsichordist Vilimas Norkūnas, a researcher of historical music and compiler of the program.
