As in many parts of the world, dogs have lived alongside humans in Lithuania since the earliest times. Lithuanian rulers also kept hunting and guard dogs. Among the most famous in history were the hunting dogs of the Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland, Sigismund Augustus - Griffin and Sibyl, -who not only hunted with the ruler, but also "feasted" and were kept in his chambers. Another notable dog was Svanas, a large Breton or Milanese breed owned by the ruler, Ladislaus Vasa.
